When Sir William Alexander Smith started the first Boys’ Brigade (BB) company in 1883, He did so because first and foremost, he wanted to teach the Christian message to Boys and young men. Brigade at its core is a Christian youth organisation and a ministry of the Church designed for character development. This is one of the main reasons Christians might consider starting and running a Boys’ Brigade Company, instead of a Scout group. Smith also founded the first Boys’ Brigade because he wanted to offer something the Sunday schools of his day didn’t- a discipleship opportunity for Boys to grow into self-respecting, confident, and disciplined young men who could go into the world and achieve great things in the name of Christ. This is one of the main reasons people consider starting a Boys’ Brigade company, as opposed to a regular church youth group. The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed youth ministry in the world that continues to operate and is in fact the father program of the Scouting movement.
